A 16th century Chinese doctor was writing in his manuscripts and was quoted " I would rather take a handful of eleutjero than a carload of gold and jewels". This can be a testament to the value this herb had through the centuries.
Benefits of Eleuthero
Increase of Energy - A major claim for the eleuthero is it's ability to increase a persons energy levels. This can be accomplished because of its impact on our nervous system, boosting the metabolism. This can be a huge boost for people who generally require naps during the day to function. In an animal study when supplementing with eleuthero it lengthened the time which mice spent performing a swim test and other related endurance tests. The eleutherosides possess the potent abilities to alleviate fatigue both in physical and mental fatigue. Eleutheroside E may be responsible for the pharmacological effect of anti-fatigue. Furthermore, the possible mechanisms were reduced the level of TG by increasing fat utilization, delayed the accumulation of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and increased the LDH to reduce the accumulation of lactic acid in muscle and then protect the muscle tissue.

Protect your DNA - Several in vitro studies have been able to point towards a potential protective effect when utilizing Eleuthero. Similarly researchers have been able to culture cells and treat them with radiation, to then find that test group they used eleuthero compounds on were more resistant to the radiation. Panax ginseng saponin and Eleutherococcus senticosus extract were applied to cells in culture in order to assess the effect of these substances on resistance to gamma-irradiation. Eleutherococcus was slightly radio protective. However, ginseng saponin at a dose of 10 microgram/ml was significantly radioprotective (Do = 2.25 Gy) compared to control (Do = 1.80 Gy) when it was present prior to gamma-irradiation. It enhanced radiation response if it was also present for 4-6 hours after gamma-irradiation (Do = 1.10 Gy). Ginseng-treated cells made 30% less RNA and 14% more protein during a 1 hour pulse of labeled intermediates. The cells were morphologically altered. It is concluded that ginseng saponin can increase radiation resistance. The effect is indirect, due to alterations in cell physiology rather than DNA repair processes. (Article) (Article)
Improves cognitive function - If you are looking for a boost to your focus and mental capacity, there has been a study conducted that shows you receive a temporary boost in clarity. It has been proven to increase blood flow to the brain and small vessels, which assists with cognition and improving of memory. (Article)
Effects on Cancer - A study conducted with the use of eleuthero extracts showed signs of antitumor effects upon the human stomach cancer cells. Eleuthero could also benefit cancer patients by affecting the immune response. In one study it stimulated the immune response in cancer patients and healthy controls. (Article) (Article) (Article)
Osteoporosis - Eleutherococcus senticosus (Siberian ginseng), has been used as a powerful tonic herb with an impressive range of health benefits. This medicinal herb has been commonly used to treat bone metabolism diseases due to its traditional Korean medicine use to strengthen muscle and bone. This study was conducted to investigate prevention of bone loss by a standardized extract of dried E. senticosus stem bark in an ovariectomized (OVX) rat model of osteoporosis. The OVX groups were divided into five groups treated with distilled water, 17β-estradiol (E2 10 μg/kg, once daily, i.p) and dried stem bark of E. senticosus extracts (DES 10, 30, and 100 mg/kg, once daily, p.o) for eight weeks, respectively. After eight weeks of treatments, the femur bone mineral density of the 100 mg/kg DES-treated group was significa (Article)
