    Goji

    The Goji Berry otherwise known as a Wolf Berry is a reddish orange berry and grows from shrubs native in Asia.
    In Traditional Chinese Medicine it has been consumed for many centuries because they had the belief that it would increase their life span. There have even been legends of Monks eating these berries high up in the Himalayan Mountains to assist with deeper states of consciousness, energy and stamina.

    These berries are usually eaten raw, in liquid form , dried or powder because they contain phytonutrients, trace minerals and vitamins.

    Benefits of Goji

    Healthier Skin - A study conducted on mice was done and they were given goji berry juice which was shown to protect the mice from UV radiation skin damage via antioxidant pathways. Antioxidant activity in the skin was demonstrated by the significant protection by 5% goji juice against lipid peroxidation induced by UVA radiation. Furthermore, two known inducible endogenous skin antioxidants, haem oxygenase-1 and metallothionein, were found to be involved in the photoimmune protection. The results suggest that consumption of this juice could provide additional photoprotection for susceptible humans.

    Antioxidant - Overall, daily dietary supplementation with goji berry for 90 days increases plasma zeaxanthin and antioxidant levels as well as protects from hypopigmentation and soft drusen accumulation in the macula of elderly subjects.

    Diabetes Treatment - An animal study was shown that when consuming goji berries it lowered blood sugar levels because it contained polysaccharides. These are a type of compound that have long-chain carbohydrates and play a major role in reducing blood sugar levels. The results of our study indicated a remarkable protective effect of LBP in patients with type 2 diabetes. Serum glucose was found to be significantly decreased and insulinogenic index increased during OMTT after 3 months administration of LBP. LBP also increased HDL levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It showed more obvious hypoglycemic efficacy for those people who did not take any hypoglycemic medicine compared to patients taking hypoglycemic medicines. This study showed LBP to be a good potential treatment aided-agent for type 2 diabetes.

    Cancer Fighting - Studies shown on cancer patients revealed a better response rate when treated with goji berries because of the physalin which has been known to kill cancer cells. They reduce irradiation- or chemotherapy-induced organ toxicities. LBPs are beneficial to male reproduction by increasing the quality, quantity, and motility of sperm, improving sexual performance, and protecting the testis against toxic insults. Moreover, LBPs exhibit hypolipidemic, cardioprotective, antiviral, and antiinflammatory activities. There is increasing evidence from preclinical and clinical studies supporting the therapeutic and health-promoting effects of LBPs, but further mechanistic and clinical studies are warranted to establish the dose-response relationships and safety profiles of LBPs.

    Energy Increase - A study conducted showed when goji berries were consumed it increased energy levels, moods and even improved the digestive health of patients. These results clearly indicate that daily consumption of GoChi for 14 days increases subjective feelings of general well-being, and improves neurologic/psychologic performance and gastrointestinal functions. The data strongly suggest that further research is indicated to confirm and extend knowledge of the potential effects of Lycium barbarum upon human health.

    Immunity Boost - Goji berries have been shown to boost immunity and had an impact on lung health which can be beneficial for patients with Asthma. Whereas the GoChi group showed a significant increase in general feelings of well-being, such as fatigue and sleep, and showed a tendency for increased short-term memory and focus between pre- and post-intervention, the placebo group showed no significant positive changes in these measures. No adverse reactions, abnormal symptoms, or changes in body weight, blood pressure, pulse, visual acuity, urine, stool, or blood biochemistry were seen in either group. In conclusion, daily consumption of GoChi significantly increased several immunological responses and subjective feelings of general well-being without any adverse reactions.
